#SwynnertonsNymphs: Join Instigate Arts and a vibrant and exciting collection of female artists, performance artists and sound artist and sonic manipulators, as the 2018 Wonder Women festival is launched in the atrium of Manchester Art Gallery at 6pm on Wednesday 1st March 2018.
In celebration of the current Annie Swynnerton exhibition, and in response to reactions against the temporary taking down of Hylas’s Nymphs painting, we’ve invited some of Manchester and Salford’s feminist queer creatives to present themselves on their own terms to launch this year’s Wonder Women Festival. In the spirit of commemoration, will these contemporary feminists re-enact the suffragette’s attempts to destroy paintings in the gallery over 100 years ago? Reacting to #NymphGate, isn’t it time we had a new pre-Raphaelite icon?….who might that be???
Whilst we are celebrating 100 years since some women got the vote, it’s clear we still have a LOT to campaign for and a lot to change. You’re invited to a unique collaboration between intersectional, feminist queer collective Moist, sound artists Lauren Palmer and Amy Horgan and international performer Grace Oni Smith.
This Wonder Women festival 2018 launch is a ‘must see’ event for anyone in Manchester.
Come along and be part of the discourse. Share your words and thoughts and absorb the vibrant atmosphere.
Celebrate the launch of Wonder Women 2018 with a feminist takeover in the atrium of Manchester Art Gallery, inspired by the radical Manchester-born artist and feminist campaigner, Annie Swynnerton (1844–1933).
